PL-5.4 DM2 - History of insulin past, present and future

Overview

Over the course of 20 minutes we will discuss older insulin such as Nph with higher risk of hypoglycemia; This will be followed by data showing how common hypoglycemia is in type 2 diabetes on insulin; and where we are at with daily basal insulins with the newer ones showing less hypoglycemia and once daily dosing; The future which has arrived in Canada before any nation  we will discuss with weekly basal insulin the studies and how to switch your patients.

Objectives

1 understand current basal insulins and rationale for using them 

2 understand  recent studies with  weekly basal in different populations

3 understand  historical development of basal insulins for type 2
